Creating a Website – Saving Money!

Posted on August 21, 2010 in Articles, Blog, Marketing, Web Development

Did you ever hear that outsourcing may save you a lot of time and money? That’s very true: if you don’t know how to cook, but need to organize event with food, you will hire a catering service. If you are not a professional security guard – you will not take care of the security of your venture. You will hire professional security guards. But for some reason everyone thinks that they know how to make websites, disregarding the fact that it’s a knowledge which you don’t learn overnight. And even over two or three nights.

If you are not a professional web developer, you may not know a lot of details that are crucial for effective work of a website. I can’t stress it enough, it’s very important that any website is done by or under supervision of a professional web developer. Otherwise a lot of money and – what’s even worse – time can be wasted for a website that is not going to work properly.

Let’s play a little game. I will ask you questions, and you answer sincerely – no peaking and looking for the answers online. What we need – is to determine if you are ready to even start working on your own website. Now, this is for you. I don’t require you to send me a proof of all positive answers. Content is the king!

Posted on August 1, 2010 in Blog, Web Development

I believe that a project must start with content. The content defines a web site structure, and the structure defines the way a web site will be navigated. Clear and simple navigation requires certain graphic and technical solutions. Content always shows the most efficient path to building a project. This is why I pay a lot of attention to the content itself, the wording, and the logic of the text model.

Common Web Development Mistakes

Posted on May 15, 2010 in Blog, Usability, SEO, Web Development
Using graphics for simply formatted text

Why do you try to cut the search engines attempt to crawl your site? Do not use graphics for text formatted with fonts that exist on any computer. You will save the download speed, place on the server and good image among your colleagues. Neither use JPGs for text – they create a “dirty” halo around the letters.

Bad content organization

When there is a lot of content on your website, it should be well organized. Visitors read from left to right, and the further they move into the site, the less visitors stay with you if you do not make it easy for them to read.

The rule is: if you think that some copy is important, put it in the beginning, where everyone can see it, don’t make your visitors to scroll and dig for the important message you want to pass them.

Using more than 2 different types of fonts in one design

The only exception when the 3rd font type is used in the logo.
