I would like to submit our new website for your review.
Our goal was to compile an updated list of every web design school in the US. We felt the existing web design school lists were not comprehensive, easy to find, and many web sites have outdated information and links. We believe we have built a useful resource for web design students and would simply like to ask that you take a look and link to us if you agree. All the web design schools are listed on the front page and lead directly to each program, additionally they are sorted by state. Read full post »
Did you ever hear that outsourcing may save you a lot of time and money? That’s very true: if you don’t know how to cook, but need to organize event with food, you will hire a catering service. If you are not a professional security guard – you will not take care of the security of your venture. You will hire professional security guards. But for some reason everyone thinks that they know how to make websites, disregarding the fact that it’s a knowledge which you don’t learn overnight. And even over two or three nights.
If you are not a professional web developer, you may not know a lot of details that are crucial for effective work of a website. I can’t stress it enough, it’s very important that any website is done by or under supervision of a professional web developer. Otherwise a lot of money and – what’s even worse – time can be wasted for a website that is not going to work properly.
Let’s play a little game. I will ask you questions, and you answer sincerely – no peaking and looking for the answers online. What we need – is to determine if you are ready to even start working on your own website. Now, this is for you. I don’t require you to send me a proof of all positive answers. You will know yourself if what is asked of you below is anything that is familiar to you…
I believe that a project must start with content. The content defines a web site structure, and the structure defines the way a web site will be navigated. Clear and simple navigation requires certain graphic and technical solutions. Content always shows the most efficient path to building a project. This is why I pay a lot of attention to the content itself, the wording, and the logic of the text model.
Print and Web Design: What Are The Differences And Why It’s Important To Design Differently For Web.
While working as a web designer, I have many times run across incredibly talented and fine artists who, while doing amazing jobs for print production, tried to design for web with very little knowledge on the technology, computer-human interaction, usability, and other important aspects that distinguish web products from print ones.
- Using graphics for simply formatted text
Why do you try to cut the search engines attempt to crawl your site? Do not use graphics for text formatted with fonts that exist on any computer. You will save the download speed, place on the server and good image among your colleagues. Neither use JPGs for text – they create a “dirty” halo around the letters.
- Bad content organization
When there is a lot of content on your website, it should be well organized. Visitors read from left to right, and the further they move into the site, the less visitors stay with you if you do not make it easy for them to read.
The rule is: if you think that some copy is important, put it in the beginning, where everyone can see it, don’t make your visitors to scroll and dig for the important message you want to pass them.
- Using more than 2 different types of fonts in one design
The only exception when the 3rd font type is used in the logo.
I set up a temporary store using Yahoo while I worked on my final, custom-designed store. They are both running and custom store is now getting slightly more traffic than the Yahoo standard template store. I use identical ad campaigns on Adwords…but for some reason the Yahoo store gets over twice the number of sales! It has a much higher conversion rate from the Adword campaign. Read full post »
My site has been getting top page positioning from all of the search engines. I also have ads running in key industry portals. I get plenty of impressions. I even get a very nice click through rate. I cannot seem to get anyone to actually subscribe. My product is very specialized. You have to enter a search for exactly what we offer in order to find my site. In other words you wouldn’t end up there by mistake. Keep in mind that the site is selling calculations to accountants so I can’t get too gimiky. I am at a loss I obviously thought I did it all the right way. Do you know where I went wrong?
If you are to change one thing of the following website what would that be?
Ugh, I know… another kid who wants some vindication that the hours he’s spent on this blog is of some value…
Nevertheless, I would like you to look at my blog for two reasons. One, the small business that is featured on my home page should be featured under the Small Business of the Week page… though, I cannot figure out how to get it over there. I’m starting to think it’s not possible. If you are any good at this stuff I would appreciate help.
Please, review this layout. i have done the design and i am going to build this website soon.
